lately, i've been putting in a lot of entries in my sketch journal. i tried to finish the everyday matters challenges [ i've completed everything except for "kitchen" and the latest one, "tree"]. i realized that it's actually relaxing and therapeutic to draw and then look at your creation later on, no matter how good or bad it looks.

last night, upon ian and my dad's recommendations, neil and i tried the new resto along tomas morato, heaven 'n eggs. the placed was unexpectedly packed - we had to wait for more than 30 minutes for a table. when we finally got one, we waited another 20 minutes or so for our orders to arrive. the wait was worth it though, because i really liked the food. my order reminded me of some dish i ordered in red robin in LA when i ate there with claudette last month. so anyway, one of the female supervisors approached us by mistake asking if we were going to bill out. she looked really familiar, but i just couldn't identify where or when i met her before. i realized later on that she was my classmate back in third grade [ uhh 15 years ago. AGH i'm damn old ] in miriam grade school. i didn't want to ask her about it, because the chances that it was her were so slim. but she looked exactly the same as she did 15 years ago, she even has the same hairstyle. i finally gathered enough guts to ask her when we asked for the bill, and i was right, it was her, tatum valdez. i remember she was one of the nicest persons back in grade school, and we used to playfully tease her about her really short hair with the small spikes at the back. it was such a surprising coincidence. she asked how i was, and we updated each other about our lives and about chismis re. our past batchmates [ hehe ]. she's really really nice, i didn't think we would talk for so long. we haven't even seen each other for 15 years. she didn't even graduate from miriam since she transferred to a different school before 7th grade. we weren't even really close back in grade 3. yet, we talked as if we belong to the same barkada in high school. we exchanged cell phone numbers. and she even treated us dessert [ banana cream pie. it was gooood. promise. ]. i was just so amazed with that coincidence. it's like finding an old acquaintance in friendster. one more thing, the common trend among high school/grade school batchmates is that when i see them after graduation, they usually look more mature and kikay than they used to. well, i'm not saying it's bad, but sometimes they just try too hard to deviate from their young selves that it's all pretentious and just plain annoying. tatum is one of the few persons who didn't change. aside from the fact that she looks exactly the same as she did when i last saw her [ again, that was 15 years ago ], she's still as nice. i've seen several batchmates around who even graduated with me, yet we don't greet each other or even make eye contact. worse, there are people i've been close with in grade school/high school who have changed to entirely different persons, who don't reply when i try to contact them or don't act interested when i try to initiate a conversation on those rare moments i see them. wala lang.
awhile ago, we had the last classroom session for the human rights class. it's officially my summer break. yahoooo...

last friday was our last day of internship. i didn't even notice the three weeks go by. maybe because it wasn't actually "work"; it was more of a volunteer job with financial benefits. hehe. it wasn't really the kind of work i was expecting - i had the impression that it would be an office job with occasional field work. i didn't know it would be the kind of NGO where the members almost worship karl marx that they have a huge poster of him on their wall [ which, i even thought was the founder, stupid me hehehe ], where che guavara's face is on everyone's accessory [ bag, shirt, cellphone wallpaper ]. yes, i've worked with activists who loathe the government and take out this hatred to the streets. don't get me wrong, they're all nice and accommodating; i was probably just culture shocked with their beliefs. maybe if i was also studied in UP during my undergrad [ and not in a jesuit school ] like daisy, who has been exposed to such people/organizations i would've been less surprised.
nevertheless, the whole internship was okay - it beats having to stay home every single day in my room, taking naps or surfing the net. somehow i'm beginning to see that there might be value in taking up the law after all [ although i suck terribly at it ]. i could use it to satisfy my altruistic yearnings and help humanity [ more specifically the philippines ]. i know this sounds cheesy, but i think the experience urged me to study more so i can do some alternative lawyering in the future. it's just different when you see the law in action as opposed to reading about boring cases and old laws all the time.
one more thing, i'm going to miss working with daisy. we didn't really work, actually. it's the food trip sessions i miss. hehe. she's the only one among my law school friends who also likes veggie food like me. hehe. and i admire her for being so responsible and street smart compared to me, considering she's even a year younger than i am. i'm glad she doesn't get pissed of whenever i screw things up due to stupid reasons. hehe.
disc
yesterday, neil and i went to the ultimate hat tournament sponsored by 103.5 k-lite. it was my second hat tourney, neil's first. like before, it was a whole day event. we played in one of the fields at the fort, where there are no trees or tall buildings nearby to provide us shade. we had to endure the scorching heat the entire day; the games even started at 11 in the afternoon kaya ang saya talaga. i kept on re-applying spf 45, but my skin still got a little dark afterwards. grr.. anyway, i played bad, same as before, but at least i was able to touch the disc this time. somehow i was able to convince my teammates to throw the disc at me [ after much screaming and running around ] and maybe out of pity they were forced to throw it at me. so i threw the disc aimlessly at no one the first time i caught it and then dropped it on the ground the second time. at least we ended up third place [ there are only 4 teams by the way hehe ].
the best thing about the event is that it was free! and we even had free lunch [ although neil and i didn't eat much ] and free snack [ jollibee burger yum. hehe ]. and the k-lite people kept on playing the best alternative songs the whole time. but tournaments are just generally tiring and stressful that i'd rather play pick-up games on beginners' night in san lo, where there's less pressure and nobody really cares about the score. [ and where there's no sun! ] yesterday [ for lack of a more appropriate term ], 'cina-career' talaga ng mga tao yung laro. one tiny mistake could lead to a disaster. parang your whole team will just hate you if you do bad. it was scary.. but most of the players, especially the coach on my team, are nice anyway.

it's raining outside. just the perfect sign to prove that summer is indeed coming to an end. the heat hasn't subsided though; everyone is complaining about the intolerable weather. i'm not exaggerating - you couldn't last for more than 10 seconds away from the electric fan. there were times when, at the middle of the night, i would wake up dripping in sweat that i have to change my shirt. and people are more prone to sickness because it's so hot inside and when you go inside the car/the mall/other establishments, the aircon is on maximum. anyway, i'm not complaining as long as i have an electric fan by my side.
reunion..
last saturday night [ after around 5 hours or more of having my hair relaxed at the salon. heehee vanity ], we had a mini-mongoloid society high school reunion with 3 of my high school friends (nirvana, erika and joey) at katips. i realized that i'm not the only homegirl after all - apparently, they all also go straight home right after work. well, i wasn't much of a gimmick girl back in high school or college anyway, but i'm more lazy to go out now. except for food trips and gigs every now and then. everytime i read the magazines, i just wrinkle my forehead while thinking, "where the hell is this 'embassy' or 'absinth' or whatever gimmick place chuva with loud music and supposedly popular people blah blah?"
anyway, regarding our little reunion, grabe i don't think the night was enough to relive all our high school memories. we tell almost the same stories every time, but we still laugh over them just the same. besides, we only meet up around once a year, so we pretty much forget about those stories the rest of the year. but i'm glad we're all still the same insane people. it also became my birthday dinner. i was also supposed to treat the harkadah out for dinner last friday, but most of us couldn't make it so i just cancelled it. i don't know if i'm still pushing through with it though.
yesterday was mother's day, but i didn't spend it much with my mom, who spent the whole day at home with a swollen gum. we had to go to church in the morning, we resumed the M12 prayer group in the afternoon, 'had lunch at galle, did a little shopping (may i emphasize little because i have already exceeded my credit card limit and i don't have much cash. darn.), got chased by the police in edsa and ate dinner at max's with neil's family.
oh yes i had another minor conflict with the law again yesterday. right after i dropped neil at their place, i was making a right turn to quezon ave. from edsa. i was just thinking about what my dad told me the other day regarding people posing as policemen and taking advantage of ladies driving alone when two MMDA persons suddenly cut in front of me and instructed me to stop the car. i panicked, and i knew i didn't violate any particular law (i wasn't on the phone or anything) so i stepped on the gas and planned on outrunning the policemen. the stop light was red, so i made a u-turn back to edsa. they were still trailing behind me, pointing at me and telling me to stop when i almost hit a jeepney. i was swerving like mad trying to avoid them. i made another u-turn, and i think they were stuck there somewhere in the intersection traffic while i was driving in edsa, going to cubao. i decided to call neil and pick him up, at least if i get to talk to the police i would have some guy with me. so i made a u-turn and went back to neil's place, which was also where i left the police, and then we talked to them. 'turned out the ford didn't have a registration sticker yet (argh of course no one told me at home about it). one of the MMDA people was so mad that i had them chase me around edsa and that they almost hit a car because of it and i decently talked to him by shouting they didn't look trustworthy at all. he, neil and i were just shouting for a good 10 seconds until i decided to call up my mom and told her about the problem. she talked to the other MMDA person who was comparably nicer than the other one. ma explained that the car was already registered but she wasn't able to get the sticker. good thing the MMDA believed her. gawd it was really so scary. neil even told them that my dad's a lawyer, i even had to say that i was a lawyer (bwahahaha yes i did that with a straight face. although i knew it wasn't the least bit believable), and my mom also said she was a lawyer (hehe halata ng hindi totoo lahat). well, i know i was the one at fault (despite that, we never admitted it and kept on making counterarguments hehe) but i think i do have a point in telling them that i had good reason not to stop, given all the horror stories i've been hearing and the past experiences i've had with MMDA people at UP. hayyy.. afterwards we just laughed about it. i must've looked like a real criminal during the police chase. hehe.
i was cleaning my inbox, when i came across this particular message i haven't read yet. ARGH. it just irked me so much. i know i was just complaining about the weather and the irritating policemen in this country, but most of the points in this message are uncalled for. some of them may be true, but most of the statements are sweeping generalizations. i don't know who wrote it, but whoever he/she is doesn't know much about the philippines at all. i think it was signed by someone who lives in the states now though. feeling niya siguro just because he/she is in the states now he/she is all that and he/she is sooo better of than the rest of us. yeah right. even if the situation in this country is depressing, there are a lot of talented and intelligent people in this country who are so full of potential that can and will be realized. and what the hell is up with "the philippines is..where University of the Philippines is where all the weird people go. Ateneo is where all the nerds go." ano ba, the grammar, for one, doesn't make any sense, and secondly, UP and ateneo are the top schools in the country and he/she has no right insulting the people in it. ano, wala na ba siyang maisip para mapuno yung 50 items kaya kung ano ano na lang pinaglalagay niya na wala namang katuturan? the entire message isn't even a joke at all, it's so downgrading. it's so poorly written and the author had no taste with his choice of words.
