life soundtrack
got this from jeline.
i have two papers due this weekend, recitation tomorrow, two hearings next week, and i choose to do THIS. hehe. just a break from all the work, before i go insane. gawd. with all the work, i feel that law school has finally swallowed me whole. although, honestly, i like it when i have full schedules. like i said before, i don't like it when things are idle.

Can you make me a promise
Stop it before we begin
Will you hold onto my head

Why are we here,
I can't accept the fact you're leaving me,
And i'm so ashamed.

What song describes you?
"such reveries" by duncan sheik
you and I in the room with the balcony
you lie on the bed while I stare at the sea

What do your friends really think of you?
"once around the block" by badly drawn boy
But I'm fascinated by your style
Your beauty will last for a while
hahaha asa pa!
Do people secretly lust after you?
"who will save your soul" by jewel
eh? hehe
How can I make myself happy?
"japanese gum" by her space holiday
Until there's nothing left to love
Until there's nothing left to say
I know that you need help
But even I can't save you from yourself
hmm.. maybe not for me..
What should you do with your life?
"talk" by coldplay
yes, i think i'm going to do a lot of that, especially with the kind of work i'm doing. hehe.
the lyrics are pretty apt though:
so you take a picture of something you see
in the future where will i be?
you could climb a ladder up to the sun
or write a song nobody had sung
or do something that's never been done
so you dont know where you're going but you wanna talk
but you feel like you're going where you've been before
you'll tell anyone who'll listen that you feel ignored
nothings really making any sense at all
Will you ever have children?
"much has been said" by bamboo
ngek.

lianner goes to court (and other jokes)
yesterday, i went to my first hearing ever. haha. and it wasn't even an actual hearing, i just went there to appear before the judge to check if the other party submitted an opposition to a motion we filed. nevertheless, i was sooo scared before that. i could feel my heart beat so loudly that i wouldn't be surprised if the judge asks me to turn it down a little. i felt uneasy entering the courtroom alone, it was like all eyes were on me [anong like, all eyes were on me. i must've looked funny, i was supposed to be there to defend my case, and i looked more scared than most of the defendants]. anyway, i was quite surprised to see a room no bigger than the regular UP law classroom. whenever i think of "courthouse", i think of church-like interiors with high ceilings and heavy, wooden furniture. or i've just been relying too much on "ally mcbeal" and "law and order". hehe. anyway, i didn't even talk for more than 15 seconds, i only said something about the substitution of law interns. 'turns out the other party didn't submit an opposition. i felt stupid for dragging the previous law intern to come with me because i was too terrified to go alone. wala naman palang gagawin. haha.
i'm worried about the next criminal case though, which is in the direct exam stage. 'might give objections, cross-examine yada yada. ack. gawd. ako pa talaga. the least bibo of them all.
i've been getting weird reactions from people who find out i have hearings already. i've written about my mom before, and i've gotten equally strange reactions from my other family members:
dad: [although he is a bit excited about the whole thing =P]
sister:
me: magpapadrive ako kay manong sa wednesday ha, may hearing ako. di niya masusundo sina patti.
sister: hearing? bakit, meron ka na bang ganon?
me: oo. counsel kami.
sister: huuu manonood lang naman kayo doon eh. hindi naman kayo magsasalita.
bakit ba ayaw niyong maniwalang counsel nga ako for the accused??
anyway.. please pray for me as i go through the hearings. and for the whole sem. and the rest of my law school life. and the bar. heehee. Labels: law school
and so it begins...
i don't know why this took a long time to sink in...
seniors na kami!!only 1 week of school and *ohmigosh*, we're already swamped with so much work. was it just 1 week? it feels like one whole month has passed since school started. i could say this is the most stressful sem for me ever. [i got the worst grades last sem though. apparently, everyone else did, so i guess i'm normal] i thought i'd never say this, but i miss being in 1st/2nd/3rd year, when all we had to do was read books and cases, when everything was theoretical. now, we have to apply what we have learned in real life. needless to say, most of the stress comes from OLA duties. ARGH. i have two hearings this week already, both criminal cases, both defending the accused. one of which is a major one and will be transferred to some masochistic soul next week,. we're already loaded with cases to read for the subjects, and i've barely studied for them. i've mostly survived because of luck [thank God one of our professors has no idea who i am, so i can blend in the background while in his class. heck, i can cut the whole sem and he wouldn't even notice]. also, the busted airconditioners in school are not helping at all. you can sit and do nothing and feel beads of sweat sliding down your skin. =P it's also hot in ohio this time of year, but at least it's not as humid there as it is here. i feel so sticky all the time that i feel the need to take a shower whenever i get home from school. my jetlag during the first days of school didn't help much either. during the first two days, i slept at around dinner time [skipping dinner altogether] and woke up at 3 am. the following days, i forced myself to sleep at 11, but ended up still waking up at 2/3 am, leaving me with only 3 to 4 hours of sleep. i ended up feeling drowsy come 6 pm that i almost slept on the wheel last friday.
visions of ohio and vast plain grasslands have become a blur. i can't believe that a little over a week ago, i was lounging in ohio and letting my brain become idle. the worst problems i've had at that time were preventing my impulsive mom from splurging on shoes, trying to fit all the items we bought in the luggage, and placating sophia when she gets tantrums. but anyway, sometimes having a full sched is good. honestly.
siyempre hindi kumpleto ang first week of school kung walang lunch/dinner sa a veneto. hehe. and so we ate dinner there with my law school barkada last tuesday.
to all the other seniors, we're all in this together. heehee.
makaaral na nga. nakatulog nanaman kanina. =P

listening to: "miracle" by the foo fighters ['just heard this song yesterday, but i have a copy now. thank you limewire!]
it's 4 in the morning. i skipped dinner last night, 'slept too early, 'woke up at 3 am and now i can't go back to bed. i usually have these moments every time i come home from a place with an entirely different timezone. since i have nothing better to do, i made a list of ALL the things i need to do today [such as have my driver's license renewed because i lost it in the US. grr.]. i was tempted to contact certain people re. important things, but of course, everyone's still in bed with a hangover from the long weekend. it's a good thing my class starts at 6 pm; i have the whole day to rest/do the things on my list.
yesterday, we arrived at the airport at 4:30 am, an hour earlier than expected. but due to the delay in the baggage claim, we left the airport at 6:30 am. it was funny because everyone in the plane had huge bags/boxes just like ours. filipinos just love taking home the whole america with them. and i'm sure everyone brought home pasalubongs for all their immediate family members, extended family members, neighbors, godchildren, friends named bhoy, baby, tito and whoever. when we arrived at our house, it was like christmas morning [o midnight] because everyone has a pasalubong. the first thing i brought out was the turon from valerio's. and empanada ordered by my mom in the states. haha. tama, galing nga kaming states. but then again, san francisco is manila in a parallel universe, with all the filipinos in the area.
'saw some people i know in the plane, by the way. the first one i saw in the sanfo airport. and he was prof. diaz. i would've enjoyed crimpro if he wasn't friends with my dad. hehe. my blockmates told me before that i get to see our professors outside school more than anyone. i didn't believe that until i saw sir d., and in US pa! i didn't recognize sir at first, but i saw him looking at my direction, probably trying to figure out who i was. he looked different somehow. but i approached him, had a small talk. he was on his way to board with his daughter so he had to go. when we reached manila, i saw a childhood friend, loi. [she was my neighbor/consistent playmate when i was 7. she was 5 at that time] she sent me a message in friendster before, telling me that she saw my pics and that she's in sanfo too, and she was also going home on the 12th. i didn't expect us to be in the same flight home, so i was pleasantly surprised when i saw her. it was a good thing i had someone to talk to while waiting for our bags to come out.
after we left ohio, we stayed for a day at manang val's house in san francisco. mama asked nanang and tatang to come over, so they could help with the packing [packing is always a major production whenever we go home. well, whenever my mom comes home from the US]. despite our efforts to contain everything in 4 big bags, we ended up buying an extra balikbayan box, which we also filled up to its maximum weight [70 lbs]. even our handcarry bags are full. and we even have some extra that couldn't fit in the luggage anymore, so they need to be sent home some other time. when we got to the airport, i witnessed a group of filipinos opening their balikbayan box and taking out certain items, because they exceeded the maximum weight limit. i figured overpacking is really a pinoy thing. hehe.
some things i miss about the US:
- all my relatives. i really enjoyed our 1 week+ reunion with all my cousins and my brother and sister's family
- my pamangkins - benjo, toby, teah, especially sophia! i just go on and on with the people in the house on how cute and smart she is, on her very sharp memory, her wit and her penchant for cute boys [haha]. i remember last week, we were eating dinuguan [courtesy of my sister's filipina neighbor]. when she saw it, she goes, "mom, i want some chocolate soup too!". hehe! she's really so adorable. i miss her terribly.
- free mall parking
- no traffic. "traffic" in the US means decongested highways in the philippines. here in manila, as long as the cars are moving, there's no traffic at all.
- shopping. especially when items go on sale. hehe! i miss the stores h&m, forever 21, etc. all we have here that has similar merchandise is topshop, and it doesn't even sell student-budget-friendly items.
things i learned in the US:
- "theraflu" is my new bestfriend
- lahat pala sa pamilya [from my grandparents down to the great grandchildren, father's side] ay mapanlait at malakas mang-asar [except for me bwahaha]
- that my 8 year old nephew, benjo, is the most sensitive person [this trait he probably inherited from his father]. he kept on crying before he left for california
- most of my extended family live in the US now, there are only a few of us left back home
- i need to workout twice as hard and twice as often as before
- i will not survive living/working in the US
- only pinoys [well, my family at least hehe] will take advantage of the unlimited condiments given out in restos. or any freebies for that matter.
things in the phil. i missed while in the US:
- all the good and cheap food!!
- greenhills
- having a driver
- cheap movies
- limewire [i.e., not illegal mp3 download. i say not illegal because i'm not even sure if it's legal here hehe. all i'm sure of is the tracking system here, if any, is not as strict as in the US]

last day in ohio
i only have around 3 hours left in ohio, and i'm wasting it on blog time. hehe. in a way i'm looking forward to going home, but i also feel heavy again about leaving. i also learned from daisy that i already have a hearing *gasp* on the 19th of june. bwahaha. i told my mom about it, and her reaction was just funny. i think she's even more worried about it than i am [she knows my capability haha], and goes "nako.. hala.." over and over. before she even told me that "nakakaawa naman yung mga kliyente, kayo maghahawak ng kaso nila" with a straight face. a few minutes later, she goes, "o, eh di mabuti yan, magagamit mo na yung mga binili mong damit dito". haha. what good is that when i don't even know what i'm going to say in court??
anyway, i'm still uploading the pics/a few videos in my multiply site. here are some visions of ohio [na walang kwenta]:

di naman siya probinsya, medyo lang. hehe. nagulat pa ako nung nalaman kong may downtown pala dito! haha

at the prime outlets. mukha kaming sasayaw. :P

i'm going to miss you, sophie!! [yaya talaga haha] but no, i'm still not going to wipe off your poopie. hehehe.

the dave matthews band concert!!
fyi, i could've taken an earlier flight home to the philippines, but i decided to extend my vacation and leave the fate of my school registration [which was scheduled june 7, philippine time] in the hands of my blockmates just so i can watch the dave matthews band concert [june 7, US time] here in ohio. i was beginning to think that watching the dave matthews band live won't be worth it, if it means that i'm going to miss out on enrollment and will be restless for a whole night [being the worrywart that i am], wondering what schedule i got and calling up my friends long-distance, trying to arrange my schedule.
but then i figured that this opportunity might not come again. the concert is only incidental to my trip; i didn't purposely fly to ohio just so i could watch the band play. sakto lang yung timing & lugar ng concert. it would be hard to follow them to whatever state they will perform in next. also, i might not see the US for a long time after this trip [because of school, the bar, blah blah]. and considering the fact that traveling to the philippines from the US is a non-insurable risk by some companies, i don't think the band will even consider performing in our country. [even the band slipknot chickened out at the last minute]. plus, thankfully, my blockmates were able to arrange a good schedule for me [thank you oggs, daisy, nico and mitch for helping me out. sorry for harrassing you every minute. hehe. i feel so helpless here and paranoid about my sched. patay tuloy ako sa phone bill nito. hehe! :P]. moreover, the concert itself proved that extending my stay here is worth it. and with the recent disastrous events in my life [such as finding out i got two 3W (three "warning") grades in two important subjects, one of which is a 5-unit subject (pulling my grade down to the lowest it has ever been), thinking too much again about certain things that do not merit much attention, finding out that the school reg. is on a first-come, first-served basis, blah blah], the concert is really the highlight of the week and shifted my attention to something else, even for a few hours.
we arrived at the germain ampitheater at around 5:30 pm, after we dropped off sophia at my sister's friend's house. it was raining [darn], so we had to buy a $5 raincoat each and use our umbrellas to shield us from the rain. at around 7 pm, the band G love and special sauce performed. i haven't heard much from them lately, but i'm familiar with their song "rodeo clowns" which became popular when i was in college. [weird, i get confused with that band and jack johnson, although they have obvious differences.]
surprisingly, it wasn't crowded much while g love was playing. after their act, however, people came flooding in the field. we were searching the crowd for asians, but all we could see was a stream of white american faces. there were only a few asians, much less filipinos. actually, aside from us, there were no filipinos at all. we weren't able to check the front seats though [the covered part of the theater. we were on the lawn together with more than half of the crowd. ubos na yung tickets sa harap :P]. the rain stopped for a short while, but began to pour again just as dmb was about to perform. i initially thought the rain would drown the crowd's spirits, but i was proven wrong. if anything, i think it even made them more hyper [what is it with the air here? hehe].
anyway, dave matthews band performed 40 minutes after the opening act. i swear, i have never seen a band perform with so much energy!! ang galing talaga! you would think that all attention will be centered on the lead singer, but each band member had an equal share in the limelight. there were a lot of instrumental acts which we really enjoyed listening to. i like it when they would try to prolong each song with the instrumental parts and play them differently from how it was played in the album. even the lights and the live videos were beautifully arranged. i couldn't believe that i was actually watching them live. i still felt like i was seeing them on a recorded gig on mtv. they mostly played their more upbeat tunes. i was so happy when they played "crash", which, i believe, is their most popular song [it was also the only song my sister and brother-in-law recognized from the whole set hehehe]. and i was also glad that a handful of songs came from their album "crash", which was the only album of dmb i have [the rest i downloaded on limewire. shame on me]. so at least i recognized a lot of the songs. i just realized, that album came out 10 years ago! i've been a fan of the band for so long. the band's songs are timeless, and there is reason to consider the group as one of the most respected bands in the rock industry. from the concert, i liked "so much to say" and "too much". after the whole set, of course, the crowd asked for more, so they went back on stage and sang two more songs. i think that part where they pretend that the concert is over is part of the playlist already. wait for 10 minutes, wait until the crowd cheers for more, get back on stage, play a mellow song and then end with a loud one. i know, it also happened with incubus and jars of clay. i didn't recognize the mellow song, but the finale is one of my favorites - "tripping billies". i accidentally discovered it on limewire while i was looking for one of their songs i didn't know the title of [which i found out later on is coldplay's song "one i love". hindi pala dmb ang kumanta. hehe]. it was one of the songs in the "crash" album that i wasn't paying much attention to. i was disappointed though when they didn't play some of their mainstream songs, like "where are you going" [popularized by the movie "mr. deeds"], "american baby", "satellite", "grey street" and "#41".
so yun. it was all worth it, and i really had fun despite the rain, the mud, the mud-soaked flip-flops and jeans, the drunken teenagers all around us, the unnecessary pushing and shoving here and there, the making out couples, the wildly gyrating people and the strange smell all over that definitely did NOT come from yosi. it was the first time that i ever got to watch a concert in the US, so i was pretty much shocked by the behavior of most of the kids. we felt like the stiffest people in the concert. hehe.
by the way, we weren't allowed to bring cameras/videocams, so i was stuck with my camera phone:

So why would you care
To get out of this place
You and me and all our friends
Such a happy human race
'Cause we're tripping billies- tripping billies, dmb
