  sem break entry # 4
today is one of the few days when i don't mind staying at home. usually, i'll be itching to go somewhere, but with the rainy weather outside (another supertyphoon is brewing, says the headline), i think i'd much rather waste away in front of the computer or finish the books i have lined up for the break (none of which are related to law. hihi. but i may need to review soon. =P). plus, i have nowhere to go. i don't want to go shopping anymore - my closet is already bursting at the seams (half of the clothes i have do not fit me anymore. but i couldn't give them away because i still cling to the possibility that i might lose weight soon). my dad, being the absent-minded person that he is, asked me earlier, "may pasok ka ba ngayon?" and knowing that it won't matter one bit what answer i give him (heck, i can tell him i'm 22 years old and it won't matter), i said, "meron". and he goes, "ha? hindi ba cancelled? malakas ulan a" and i answered, "meron pa rin daw eh." and i told him i needed to use the restroom first, since i had a class today. i would've gone so far as to ask him for my weekly allowance until my conscience held me back. hehe.

last week..

we went to the wake of one of my dad's partners, who passed away two weeks ago due to cancer. i wasn't supposed to go especially since i found out "the brotherhood" (a.k.a., my dad's frat) would be there and there's a great possibility that some of my professors will be going. hehe. after much prodding from my mom, i decided to go. the first person i saw when i got there was the judge for the muntinlupa case. (pareng judge, kita kits sa court!) the second person i saw was sir labits (name shortened to ward off potential googlers looking for his name). i didn't want to greet him, so i pretended not to see him. he didn't see me anyway. and so i was able to successfully pass unnoticed. but when i met my dad, he goes, "O, ANDYAN SI LABITS, NAKITA MO BA?" so much for passing by unnoticed. sir labits, being good-humored, goes, "sinisingil na nga ako ng papa mo sa mga recitation mo eh". and i asked, "ah sir naalala niyo pa ba ako? hehe" because honestly, i did not stand out in his class - i was never a stellar student (in law school in general) and i even got a mediocre grade in his subject. i wouldn't be surprised if he muttered, "eh latak ka namang bata ka" under his breath. bwehe. i spent the rest of the night beside my mom, eating the free pizza (yes, they weren't just serving peanuts at the wake). i also saw tito sotto. hehe. dad's partner was famous for handling libel cases. no wonder. (which reminded me of our - daisy, chi, etc. - plan to establish a showbiz law firm. haha.)

books..

i've been into books (apart from all the hard bound books we read in school =P) since the exam weeks started. i think i've read more books in the past two weeks than i did during any break, even during idle moments. anyway, the following are some of the books i've finished/am currently reading/plan to read. the italicized ones i'm done with.
  • the god of small things by arundhati roy
  • everything is illuminated by jonathan safran foer
  • the golden compass by phillip pullman
  • the subtle knife by phillip pullman
  • the amber spyglass by phillip pullman
  • commercial law review by villanueva (bwahaha sana lang..)
  • fragile things by neil gaiman (but i haven't bought it yet =P)
  • stardust by neil gaiman
and as per mark's recommendation:
  • the good earth by pearl s. buck
  • the four loves by c.s. lewis
  • the prophet by kahlil gibran
  • the street lawyer by john grisham
i was looking for a copy of the time traveller's wife, but they ran out of copies in fully booked.

i particularly enjoyed everything is illuminated. the novel may be peppered with expletives and contains scenes that will shock the senses, but it was good altogether. it's funny like good omens (by neil gaiman), but it's downright serious. (good omens was a laugh trip from beginning to end) i was specifically touched with the father-daughter relationship between yankel and brod (brod was a baby girl adopted by yankel when the latter was in his early 70s):

yankel made every effort to prevent brod from feeling like a stranger, from being aware of their age difference, their genders. he would leave the door open when he urinated (always sitting down, always wiping himself after), and would sometimes spill water on his pants and say, Look, it also happens to me, unaware that it was brod who spilled water on her pants to comfort him. when brod fell from the swing in the park, yankel scraped his own knees against the sandpaper floor of his bathtub and said, I too have fallen.when she started to grow her breasts, he pulled up his shirt to reveal his old, dropped chest and said, it's not only you.

wala lang. it might have been an unconventional way through which yankel expressed his love, but it was love nonetheless. and it was amusing. hehe.

another quote that struck me, from the prophet:

and all work is empty save when there is love;
and when you work with love you bind yourself to yourself, and to one another, and to God.

time to rethink law school. haha. joooke. =P

so if you have good book recommendations, send them my way. (pahiram na rin. hehe) =D

btw, have you heard the new urbandub-dicta license collaboration? ang galing! it's playing in NU now =D and i love "sino sikat"'s song, "turning my safety off".

oo nga pala tatapusin ko pa yang write up na yan. x_x

mark and lianne go to tagaytay! and EK!
(yes, the slightly photoshopped pic ['added the dark blue corners =P] on the left can pass for a sleazy-pinoy-romantic-movie poster with an equally sleazy title - "you are the one" "got to believe" "don't give up on us" "close to you", etc. you can use interchangeably with the other. unless of course it's set in milan or dubai, then it has to be entitled, "milan" or "dubai". in this case, "tagaytay". or "EK"? "exodus"? bwaha.)

mark and i have been planning for a tagaytay daytrip months ago. but thanks to law school and my full, sadistic saturday sched, going there during the first sem was impossible. i've honestly been daydreaming about going out of town (anywhere remote from law school and the trial courts hehe) in between hearings and exams, so i was really excited when we finalized, at long last, the tagaytay trip (which was planned only two days prior).

it felt so good passing by the SLEX and bypassing the muntinlupa area. (hah. no more muntinlupa hearing forever and ever!! but i don't want to speak too soon) i was expecting heavy traffic at the SLEX (for a person who has endured too many fortuitous events, i can't help being too cautious about things), but i was pleasantly surprised that we were able to sail through the highway on the way to tagaytay in about an hour. there was no traffic at all. we reached massimo's just in time for lunch. despite the fact that it was 12 in the afternoon, it was cool and breezy, and the sun didn't annoy me at all (as it normally would). we found out that we were the only ones in massimo's (along with the cook, the cook's family, the waiters and two ostriches). we had our fill of appetizer, steak and pasta. the food was really good, it was definitely worth travelling one hour for. afterwards, we passed by the starbucks area, where we could have a proper view of the taal volcano and the surrounding islands. so that was where everyone was. =P 'had the mandatory photo op. (the last time we had a photo op in that area, i was with the harkadah, and we were doing the "left-right". embarrassing, i know, but we were in college and we didn't know any better. haha). and then had the mandatory buko-pie-buying at colette's for the moms.

mark and the ostrich hehe

then we proceeded to EK. (the only theme park
this country has to offer. but hey, there's always star city..) from the road, i was wondering why the rides (the space shuttle and the wheel of fate in particular) weren't operating. it then occurred to me that, despite what it says on the EK website that the park is open on eid il-fitr, and even if my friend, who was in EK the other day, told me that it is open, and even if mark had it confirmed that the park is open, it could be possible that they're closing it for the day. i know, O.A. na, paranoid/whatever, but really, i'm so used to force majeure (yes, throw in the legal terms. hihi) that it has become as regular and normal as breathing. anyway, the park was not closed, thank God. and the good thing was, not many people thought of going to EK that day. save for some school kids on field trip, some families, barkadas and groups of koreans, there weren't much people, so we were free to move about the park. there were no long lines either.

we first rode anchors away (not too good memories of that ride, as i got dizzy afterwards the first time i rode in 1st year high school). i surprisingly enjoyed it this time. maybe i was wrong in keeping my eyes shut throughout the ride before. and then we rode the wheel of fate, which was memorable because it was mark's first time to ride a ferris wheel ever. his palms were so wet from sweat, it's
like he's just been on the rio grande. hehe! but he relaxed later on, after realizing that the ride wasn't so bad. then we rode the rialto (hello yogi bear), the 4D ride (i don't know why they charge an extra 40 bucks for that. the cgi seems so outdated and the white screen had a black blotch in the middle. but the person beside me was so into the movie, his reactions scared me more than the scenes ever did. haha. exciting! you should watch the promotional video, funneee! we had a good laugh throughout, nonetheless), and then the jungle log jam (my favorite ride ever. i get so nervous right before the fall though, but after that, i want to ride it again. we laughed so hard at the candid pic. it looked as if an entire fist can fit in each of our mouths sa lakas ng sigaw namin. nawala na ang poise =P).

at the wheel of fate

we thought the space shuttle was closed for maintenance the entire day, but when we got there after riding the 4D, we discovered it was open. i was a bit wary at first to ride it, since after i rode it the last time, i was immobilized for the rest of the night and i wasn't able to ride the rio grande as originally planned. but, i still hopped on the ride (it was my second time ever, it was his first). i had my eyes closed the entire time, and i can only hear mark calling for his mommy the screams all around me. anyway, as i got down, i got so dizzy (again), and so we weren't able to ride the rio grande as originally planned (again). i must've underestimated the ride's effect on me the last time. =P i was actually retching inside the restroom, but thankfully none of the good food we consumed for lunch came out. hehe eeew. note to self: keep eyes open the next time. mark and i decided to just walk around the park, enjoy the cool breeze and the lights, have another photo op. as for me, i proceeded to the great houdini to buy a tablet of bonamine. i think that did the trick, but then it also made me feel drowsy afterwards. we had dinner at rai rai ken somewhere along SLEX. and then i rested my head on mark's shoulder during the entire trip back to manila. woohoo! sulit ang holiday! =D

me and the wizard. hilo na ako sa mga oras na yan. hehe.

tagged by tessa:

but first: happy bertdey penny sy!!!

now on to the list:

what are your (top 5) dream jobs?

  1. artist/graphic designer. i want to be a freestyle artist who works on a contractual basis, making designs for cd covers, books, packaging, postcards, etc. i keep a collection of promotional cards/free postcards i get from all over. yes, this includes being an illustrator for children's books. i get so awed looking at the ilustrador ng kabataan website, wishing that i was part of the group. i did inquire about it, but that's the farthest i've gone in pursuing that dream. the last time i worked with my art materials was waaay back in july 2005, i think.

  2. working for a magazine - magazine editor/writer/columnist/lay-out/photographer. you also get a lot of perks, like travelling to different places, meeting new people. i think some pics i took before were published in magazine, but i never got to confirm that. i didn't even bother to check the magazine. tsk tsk. it would be fun to have your own photo (or art) exhibits too.

  3. fashion designer/stylist/fashion illustrator or basta anything to do with fashion. i love clothes and shopping (shopping has always been my quick antedote for the blues hehe). 'must be nice to get paid just by hunting for nice clothes, experimenting with them or mixing and matching them. and maybe getting free clothes/sponsorships once in a while. and i want to be a fashion illustrator like jordi labanda.

  4. working in an ad agency, where i can think of creative ways to market a product. i always take notice of those witty tv commercials/radio/magazine ads. oh and i remember, media was my best subject back in 4th year high school. i know, i should've probably pursued a field related to that. well, we'll see how things work out after law school's over.

  5. food critic. hehe. wala lang, i just love to eat. being a restaurant owner is also nice, but then i'll be eating most of the food and that won't be good for the business.

other nice jobs: web designer, events organizer, comic book artist, interior designer, sales girl in forever 21 or urban outfitters (ooh, the discounts and privileges i'd get!!), researcher(ewan.. for anything? even law. i like solving/answering questions), dj in a good radio station, host (hehe law school has made me realize that i love to talk too).

i tag.... anyone. go mark! hehe

now excuse me while i go prepare for another boring hearing. pfft.

  sem break n....
...ot quite.

i had my final FINAL exam last thursday night, but there's still a lot of winding up to do. like finishing the tax paper and election law papers. plus, i have two hearings next week. sadly, OLA's not affected by the sanctity of the sem break. i'll also be utilizing the break for studying for the bar. hyuck. so it's going to be a bit busier than usual.

despite all the requirements, the past week has been quite relaxing. some mornings, i would wake up feeling that i'm right in the middle of the christmas break. the weather's getting a bit cooler lately too (no snow yet, but we're expecting that early december. haha).

the whole week last week, my dad stayed home because of hypertension. we're used to my mom getting sick all the time, but when my dad gets sick, it disrupts the entire household. he was unusually weak, he seemed almost human. hehe. so last week, for the first time in months, my mom, dad and i ate lunch out together on a week day - last tuesday at gerry's grill and last wednesday at something fishy. (he was looking for a place where they serve food low on cholesterol, and that was the best he could come up with). it's funny how he tried to appear strong and normal the whole time and how he still insisted on attending all his rotary affairs despite his apparent weakness. my mom would accompany him naman daw, armed with her BP kit, so there's no need to worry. =P he's just so used to living such a busy life day after day, doing work, playing golf, attending to his orgs, texting jokes through his cell to other senior citizens, that he gets restless every time he's forced to slow down with his lifestyle a bit. anyway, while he was sick, he found the perfect opportunity to talk to me about the M word. yes, 'mancipation. hehe. the threat of my emancipation, a word here that means, "the acquisition of civil capacity by the child of a family or minor who leaves parental authority or guardianship" (Abayon vs Japitana Transportation Corporation, 67144-R, April 28, 1982 [wow, it was decided exactly one day after i was born]), unexpectedly struck him hard on the head last week, when he had this dream that included me and a wedding. he didn't disclose the dream in full detail (but he did anyway to my sister who told me all about it later), but from the way he said he was glad he woke up after such a long dream, it seemed to me that it was more of a nightmare.

i sure do hope it didn't have anything to do with, much less was the cause of the hypertension.

  iProcrastinate
taking a short break from studying. 'was supposed to study till sunset at coffee bean t.morato, until i found myself getting dizzy after lunch. 'went home, plopped myself in front of the computer and decided to write this brainless entry. 'will write about the past weeks after the Finals are over. For now, here's a music meme. (Got this from jeline's LJ) i'll just list down the 7 songs i've been playing over and over lately in my iPod.

List any seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your LiveJournal blog along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to.

1) "float on" by modest mouse
2) "banquet" by bloc party
3) "munich" by the editors
4) "when the sun goes down" by the arctic monkeys
5) "when you were young" by the killers
6) "you only live once" by the strokes
7) "three libras" by a perfect circle

they're all brit. rock. or at least brit. sounding. except for the last one, which seems out of place since it's the only song in the list that was released 6 years ago.

who to tag.. hmm.. mark, of course. and all my blogging friends who regularly visit my site. assuming i have blogging-friends-who-regularly-visit-my-site. hehe. (sige na nga - daisy, grace, my cousin kris, rich, mitch, lorr, tessa, etc. even if you visit my site not-so-regularly. hehe. ay, 8 na pala yan. oh well.)

  wala lang

the next seven days would feel like a month, with mark away on a business trip in singapore. hay. at least his trip falls on finals week. somehow, i think i wouldn't notice the time move so slowly as i force one semester's worth of lessons down my throat. and, i have the following things to smile about:

ang pagbabalik..

the mcdo rice burger is back! that's the only reason why i've been eating at mcdo again. more specifically, the chicken supreme rice burger. so what if i'm the only one i know who even takes interest in rice burgers. hehe. double vanilla latte's back in all coffee bean branches too. the coffee shops have been out of stock for a while.

and guess who's back in town...

wahoo! (i know only two people can relate with this hehe)

and they remixed dandy warhols' "we used to be friends". 'changed the intro, 'made it all sepia. the new intro gives the show more attitude. the first episode of the 3rd season isn't as exciting as i expected, though. maybe the next few episodes will have more action.

the kids are in college now. and lookee, veronica has a new (seemingly geeky) love interest. i like the new character. he seems a lot better than logan, who can be a real jerk (hyuck, sineryoso talaga =P). or duncan, who expresses no emotion half the time.

a little trivia:

tina majorino's part of the regular cast now. remember her from this movie?

and this guy, francis capra..

..was in kazaam.

they do grow up fast, don't they.

oh wait, shouldn't i be doing the tax paper? tsk tsk..

  long time
after four days of living in a cave, living off melting candles, emergency lights, cellphones with low batt and hot drinking water, i'm back in civilization. i'm just thankful for the fact that i can turn on this computer, enjoy the cool breeze coming from the airconditioner and be connected to the world wide web once again. darn "milenyo" (ang jolog naman ng pangalan ng bagyo) causing power outage. our house is one of the last ones to have its electricity restored. actually, almost all the streets in north fariview have electricity already. the cutoff starts from our house and extends to the rest of the street. but now i'm happy we have it again. as i speak, i think there are still a lot of areas that don't have electricity. i don't think meralco was prepared for this kind of calamity. in fact, i don't think the city was prepared for this kind of calamity. this is the first time i've seen so many uprooted trees (and really big ones at that) and fallen billboards. there was this huge billboard next to a flyover in edsa that toppled down. it was so misshapen that it looked like it was crushed by a really large metal hand. even the light and electric posts were not spared from the typhoon. they have literally been bent and folded like paper. last thursday, i even had the guts to go to shangri-la in the morning, thinking the weather wouldn't be that bad. i also took judicial notice of pag-asa's tendency to make wrong weather forecasts 70% of the time. i was so wrong. mama even asked me to go to greenhills to buy yet another fake lacoste shirt. hehe. i was protesting at first, but i felt guilty afterwards so i went there and bought it. i was so scared though, since the winds were getting stronger they were blowing away some of the merchandise. hehe. anyway, manong drove me home, and we got to have a first hand view on how the typhoon developed. we had to detour somewhere in new manila because of a fallen tree, leaving only one lane open. the pink "metro-gwapo" signs by bayani f. along commonwealth all fell down. posters/ads were getting blown one by one. i managed to get home in one piece though. we stayed at my sister's house across the street after a lunch of pizza hut bbq ribs (poor delivery guy), watching the branches falling and the kitchen door moving back and forth incessantly. papa was still out, probably playing golf or something (with that weather??).

later that night, papa and i bought food from kfc, sm fairview. apparently, that's where everyone was. because that's the only place in fairview with a working generator. there were even people at the gym. haha. although they had to turn the tv sets off. the weather was still a bit cool that night, so i slept in peace. i can't say the same for the next few days, however. i think i got crankier everyday because of the brownout. especially since our next door neighboor already had their electricity back since saturday night. and i had to go all the way to shangri-la (which was also operating on generator =P) and eastwood (which already had electricity as early as friday) to study, charge my phone and enjoy the air-con. yan tuloy, i got into an unexpected shopping spree. saturday i was there again, accompanied by mark and his younger bro. jason this time, who still didn't have electricity at their house. 'went to the gym and tried to forget that 15% of the city's vegetation has been destroyed by the typhoon.

good things came out from that typhoon, though. our last OLA duty day was cancelled (yess!!!) my two hearings were cancelled. well, postponed to later dates. i hope those later dates would be sometime in november though, so the next law intern can worry about them. teehee.

* * *

i realized i haven't blogged in a long time. i've been updating my multiply account religiously though. there was mark's birthday at greenbelt, dinner with the harkadah at eastwood, the salubong last sunday (which mark wrote about in detail here) and nico's birthday buffet at hyatt. haha, tamad na magsulat. post to follow.

oh, and we just celebrated our 3rd monthsary last thursday. yes, on the day of the typhoon. haha. but we compensated for that yesterday. => happy 3rd monthsary love! =) (and so sorry that your crazy girlfriend went out of the house despite signal no. 3, leaving you all worried last thurs. heehee.)
