  darn it
yesterday, i went to the student lounge for the toga fitting (yihee graduation =P) and found out that (at least from the list that i saw yesterday) i have the smallest head size in the batch with 21 cm (cm yun right?). and then i saw this article on the net. darn, no matter i'm lagging behind my batchmates. haha. (i know, this is no valid excuse =P):

Big heads really are smarter

Being a fathead has its compensations. Scientists have discovered that people with large skulls are more likely to fare well in the twilight of their years - at least when it comes to remembering what they are doing.

This striking conclusion is the handiwork of scientists who have uncovered a close correlation between the size of a pensioner's cranium and the results of intelligence and memory tests. In other words, when it comes to brainpower, size does matter.

'What we found was very clear,' said the group's leader, Dr Christopher Martyn, of Southampton University's environmental epidemiology unit. 'The larger a person's head, the less likely their cognitive abilities are to decline in later years.'

And for people with small heads, the results of the study - to be published in next month's issue of Brain - are particularly bleak, for the unit found that people with the smallest heads had a fivefold increased risk of suffering cognitive decline compared with those with the largest heads.

The team began their studies on a sample of 215 men and women aged between 75 and 80. Each was given an initial IQ test and a memory test, and was then asked to retake these three years later. The decline in each person's cognitive powers was carefully calculated.

The team then measured each individual's head circumference and searched their medical records for midwives' notes on which their head size at birth were recorded.

The results showed a clear link between head size and loss of memory and cognitive ability in later life. The bigger the head, the less the decline. However, Martyn stressed that his study found that those born with a small head were not automatically doomed to early senility. It is subsequent brain growth in infancy and childhood that is the crucial criterion, he discovered.

In other words, being born with a big head is far less important than having good growth as you progress through childhood. During the first year of life, babies' brains double in size, and by the time they are six, their brain weight has tripled. These are the crucial years for laying down brain cells and neural connections.

'Proper nourishment in early life and providing a stimulating intellectual environment are vital for achieving good brain growth and development and this lasts through life. In other words, brain growth in childhood is important not only in determining how bright you become but how bright you stay,' said Martyn.

'That is the real message from this study: that we have to ensure infants and children are brought up in conditions that optimise brain growth - partly to provide us with lots of bright young adults but also to reduce risk of decline in higher mental function in old age.'

The Southampton study also provides the best evidence yet uncovered for demonstrating the importance of head size. According to Martyn, a person's head circumference is closely correlated with brain volume and that in turn is related to mental ability. For example, researchers from the University of Western Ontario who measured the width of the heads of brothers aged 20 to 35 and then put them through a series of intelligence and cognition tests, found that greater width pointed to greater intelligence.

In addition, a link with brain size and Alzheimer's disease was suggested by a study published several years ago in the British Journal of Psychiatry. The bigger the skull size, the less likely a person seems to suffer from the disease. Now the Southampton unit has provided careful measurements to back these findings - and to suggest a route for reducing the problem.

if you're stressed out and you know it...
i'm obviously facing hell weeks once again, *hopefully* my last hell weeks ever in law school. (God, just let me graduate pleeeaaase. and let me pass the bar =P) my blog's been idle for a long time and i figured this would be an opportune time to update. hehe =P fortuitously, the finals for the 2 5-unit subjects i'm taking fall on the same date AND the same time. good thing the other prof moved the exam a few hours earlier for me, but still... by the 27th, i swear i'll be a vegetable. there are so many things to do for school that i don't even have time to look back at the last 4 years and go senti over law school. (who the heck goes senti over law school anyway? darn, i'll be missing all those OLA clients...)

these are just some of the things i've been doing to keep me afloat during these trying times:

1.) writing notes on nice notebooks. the cute covers just inspire me to write. hehe. the inside pages are just filled with boring latin terms and legal jargon (i know, what a waste). but at least i can display them all in my bookshelf and on mindless days, look at the covers and admire the artsy designs.

clockwise from left: 1st 2 notebooks: from fully booked, white notebook - pasalubong from mark from singapore, pink notebook - something i got from ria at riaholic.multiply.com

2.) wearing nice clothes and attempting to look good. you might feel like you're carrying the whole world on your shoulders, but the entire population doesn't have to know that. by all means, force a smile and try to look beautiful. it's the least you can do. try to look like you've spent an hour fixing up yourself when in reality it only took you 5 minutes to put everything together (excluding the hours you spent the night before contemplating on what to wear the next day).

3.) eating good food. i.e., jollibee's crispy chicken burger. such a cheap treat (only P39!)

4.) listening to good music. natasha bedingfield's "unwritten" surprisingly makes me feel relaxed and positive (i first heard it at the body balance class a long time ago when i still went to the gym).

5.) choosing not to be stressed. it's easier said than done, but yes, it is possible. there's really no use thinking about all those cellfone numbers and senti messages i lost. (stupid phone. hehe) and all those pounds i'm gaining because of lack of gym time (and because of the jollibee crispy chicken burger and starbucks coffee).

6.) in relation to no. 5, stop trying to take control of everything. i should know better than not to trust God again that he couldn't get me through. because He will. and believing that there's a reason for everything (despite the undesirably fortuitous / supervening events. obvious ba i'm in the middle of studying oblicon. hehe)

irony (\??-r?-n?): sporting this pin and going through a series of unforunate (some fortuitous) events the entire week.

insensitivity (\(?)in-?sen(t)-s(?-)tiv-i-tee\): ads/billboards/other publicity depicting visions of summer when there are still students who have to hurdle school requirements and are not even sure if they will graduate on time. if they will graduate at all.

intestacy (\in-?tes-t?-s?\): uhh..

  "ambisyoso"
i never really liked kamikazee, until they veered away from the angsty, moshpit-worthy tunes and mellowed down a bit. they're just so funny, and their videos are hilarious as well. and it's nice how they display the same down-to-earth character that made parokya ni edgar famous. and so i post again a gayness music video. hehe. this is a video of "ambisyoso" by kamikazee where they made a parody of queer eye. enjoy: =D

hehe pasensha na sa kababawan. 'still rotting at home. don't want to go to school again ever. x_x

  "you are gold....
...and silver!"

"PoP! Goes My Heart", by PoP!, from the Music & Lyrics movie

nothing like a dose of good old 80's gayness to make you feel better on a drab day.

and no, this dress was not inspired by the song. hehe.

last saturday, we had the Old Hollywood themed Winlaw ball. it's our last Winlaw ball ever. it would've been better if more than 5 seniors turned up, but we had fun anyway with my blockmates + our fantastic dates. (and such a sweet date i had. yihee!)

'finally passed the torch to cha as the new VP-publications head (although i'm still in charge of the Windows newsletter for the year which we will hopefully release by this month).

check out my multiply site and the winlaw multiply site. look out for angel(the new pres.)'s bongga dress and miles and suzi's fur accessories. nice. =)

the past few days has been a rollercoaster of emotions. i think i'm taking the next two days off.
